This is the chance you take with Chatroulette, a website that generates a live webcam connection between you and a random stranger every time you click "Next" (or press F9 on your keyboard).
If you don't like who you see staring back at their webcam, click to find another random live person and a new face pops up within a second or so. After allowing the Flash plug-in to activate your webcam and microphone, it's time to play "the game," as the site puts it.
Chatroulette is a website where you can anonymously meet people of virtually any age from around the world to chat with.
You can communicate using text-based chat, voice, and most importantly your webcam.
The result can be unpredictable and raw, like a slap in the face, but also refreshing, a peek into someone else's life.
It's far from the sanitized worlds we create for ourselves on sites such as Facebook, where we mainly connect with friends, family and people with common interests. It didn't seem worth it to stick around and find out.
Recent people we met on Chatroulette included a recently retired U. Marine and two sisters in Manila who wanted to talk about food.
There are strange sights too: a young man wearing a surgical mask; a woman eating her cereal and reading a book at the kitchen table; and three guys doing arm curls with weights in what appears to be a college dorm room.
One informal study published in March 2010 shows that nearly half of all Chatroulette "spins" connected a user with someone in the USA, while the next most likely country was France with 15%.
Chatroulette randomly links users with strangers who could be anywhere in the world.
If you don't like the person who pops up on the screen, just click "Next." Repeat.
While the site says you have to be at least 16 years old to use this service, there is no age authentication. Not only are you encouraged to talk to strangers, but young eyes can see a naked middle-aged man just as easily as they can find a tween girl singing a Taylor Swift song.
But that's not to say there aren't interesting people to talk to.
